In Alberta, couples can file for divorce under either of the following circumstances: When one spouse no longer provides significant financial or domestic support to the marriage; or If the spouses are living in a domestic violence situation and are unsafe to be in the same residence as each other.The filing spouse must also provide evidence of the reason(s) of the breakdown in their marriage. The judge will then decide if the divorce is in the best interest of the children.
