Open Family Day is an initiative started by the Family Planning Association (FPA) to facilitate discussions about family planning between parents and children. It encourages open and honest conversations about family planning, sexuality and relationships with children.The day is celebrated on the second Wednesday in November, but it can be adapted to the specific needs of your family. You can hold the discussion in a park or caf, invite friends or relatives, or use internet-based tools.The aim is for all members of the family to express their views and share their experiences using information that they have access to at home (e.g. computers, tablets, books).Open Family Days give everyone involved the opportunity to: Understand parental fears and concerns about sexual education in schools and online resources; Encourage open conversations about sexuality; Promote healthy relationships between boys and girls; Discuss contraception methods with children; Communicate effectively with children according to their age and understanding; Share contraceptive tips with children; Identify child safety resources; and more…

What is open on Family Day in Alberta?

Family Day is a holiday observed in the Canadian province of Alberta on August 26. It is observed to celebrate the relationships and bonds within families. Family Day was first observed in 1987, and has been officially recognized since 1989 by the provincial government. The holiday was created due to the high demand for a day off for families in the province. The holiday was first celebrated on June 6, but was moved to August 26 to coincide with the provincial school board teachers’ strike.
